Ellen's random fact of the day- Log 6

I send my fact to 57 people.  Some people get it individually, some are in group chats, others are even on a Remind class that I created.  Every day I spend at least 10 minutes just looking for a fact.  Then it takes me a while to send it to everyone.  I would say that it takes me a total of 20 to 25 minutes of my day are spent doing my fact.  Sometimes this can be even longer if it is hard to find a good fact, or if I have to fact check.  I don't want to send out a fact to people that is not true.  Most days I get a little scared that someone is going to reply to a fact saying that it is not true.
Most days I have to check my facts because a lot of the times the places I get the facts are not very trustworthy.  Sometimes I hear facts on NPR, other times from people who want to suggest facts.  Overall, where I get my facts varies greatly and so does where and how I fact check them.
It is a little sad that I even have to check facts.  Since there are so many false facts and news stories out there, you never know what you can trust.  "Never believe what you read on the internet," is what everyone says and sadly it is true.  I feel like the internet should be trustworthy.  Far too many people believe stories that are completely false, and far too many people spread these lies around.  Most of the time the people that spread the false facts or stories believe that they are true and that is part of the problem.  People should be able to believe facts without having to fact check them.  We need to find a way to eliminate the false information on the internet and replace it with stories that are true.  This may never happen because it is almost impossible.
I'll just have to keep fact-checking.

  1. It is disappointing that people feel a need to start spreading false ideas. As you said, most people that spread false information think it's true, but people that just come with false facts to support their ideas or start problems are the real reason we can't completely trust any information we find online. However, often once people read a false fact, it is automatically very credible in their mind, and they will defend it when challenged, instead of just admitting that they allowed themself to be misled. This also contributes to the spread of false information.

  3. Ellen, I love your random fact of the day and I am so sorry that the internet is filled with lies. I too like to do my research on random things and I never know if what I am reading is true or not and it makes me wonder what I can trust.

  4. Even though I never respond to your random fact of the day I do enjoy them. But I think it's true how, for lack of a better word, sketchy the internet is. For no reason at all it seems people spread lies or rumors that actually affect people's lives. The internet has become a place to spread opinion more than fact. There seems to be barely any credibility in the internet, and though a place that seems so filled with knowledge, the amount of lies makes interpreting information quite difficult.
