Ellen's random fact of the day- Log 6

Image
I send my fact to 57 people.  Some people get it individually, some are in group chats, others are even on a Remind class that I created.  Every day I spend at least 10 minutes just looking for a fact.  Then it takes me a while to send it to everyone.  I would say that it takes me a total of 20 to 25 minutes of my day are spent doing my fact.  Sometimes this can be even longer if it is hard to find a good fact, or if I have to fact check.  I don't want to send out a fact to people that is not true.  Most days I get a little scared that someone is going to reply to a fact saying that it is not true. Most days I have to check my facts because a lot of the times the places I get the facts are not very trustworthy.  Sometimes I hear facts on NPR, other times from people who want to suggest facts.  Overall, where I get my facts varies greatly and so does where and how I fact check them. It is a little sad that I even have to check facts....

Data mining and narrow casting- Log 5

Image
When people go on social media it is to connect with other people, to talk to their friends, not to give their information away.  When people talk about the good parts of technology being forgotten when media and technology are criticized, they often bring up the fact that now people can connect much easier.  I can have a conversation with someone across the world if I wanted.  But this brings in another dark side to it.  Because we give away so much information about ourselves when we do go online, the media companies sell this information to earn money, since media is free. Data mining taints the good parts of media.  The part that I have almost unlimited access to so much information is darkened by the data being collected and sold on me.  The part that I can talk to my friends whenever I want is overshadowed by the corporations that now have even more data on me.  They know what I am doing, when I am doing it, and can even predict what...

Lovemarks-Log 4

Image
Everybody loves Disney, how could they not?  The company has turned itself into a Lovemark.  When people hear the name they immediately think about their childhood spent watching the movies or going to the theme parks.  People are loyal to Disney, and other Lovemark brands, beyond reason.  Everyone is devoted to Disney and its products so much that they may not even know why anymore.  This is the ultimate goal of every company, to have such a following of loyal people that you only need to show your brand name and people want it.  Even in class talking about Lovemarks, when Disney was mentioned,  everyone went "I love Disney!"  Disney is a business, its goal to make money, not to "make dreams come true."  The company makes a gross of $13,611 billion annually from their theme parks alone. I didn't grow up watching Disney movies or going to Disneyland but I know a lot of people who did.  I have friends who go to Disneyl...

reMarkable-Log 3

Image
This ad that came up before a YouTube video that I watched was very interesting.  It starts off asking what the human race has become after showing a little girl become a monster when some tech was taken away from her.  It goes on to show how obsessed with technology we are and how our lives, our joy is centered only around technology.  How our entire lives are on technology.  We love having our entire lives, work and free time in technology.  We are trapped in it and everyone knew it but we couldn't resist it.  Our behavior was effected, and how we interact with other people.  Technology, which was meant to help us, is now attacking us.  It then goes to say how technology needs to be reinvented and that is what reMarkable is.  It is digital to get rid of clutter and "set a new human direction" and "get your brain back." This ad was really well done.  It makes the color scheme, the music, and the animation all really de...

Language in the News-Log 2

Image
Most of the time when it comes to news, I am aware of what is going on but I don't know a ton about it.  A lot of the news is so depressing that I don't really want to know much about what is happening.  For example, the tear gas that was released on migrants on the border.  That alone is sad and unacceptable but then the people in charge of this country make it worse by their reactions and things they say.  All major news sources have stories about this incident although some may present it in a different way than others do.  When I looked up articles about the incident, hundreds came up.  I wanted to compare two articles about the same thing from opposite sides of the political spectrum.  The more left more progressive Huffington Post and the more conservative Washington Times.  When I looked up "caravan te...
