MissRepresentation Women In Politics- Log 9

The documentary MissRepresentation talked a lot about women in politics, bringing up points about self-objectification, voices in politics, women's views on woman leaders, and woman leaders in other countries.  There are real problems surrounding gender in the world that need to be solved.  If young girls are not assaulted by such judging media, a lot could be different.
The media is centered around the criticism of people.  Women are presented in a way that makes the reality of women and girls seem sub-par.  Young men start to judge women more harshly because of this, and girls but immense pressure on themselves to conform to men's ideals that are presented in media.  Girls start to objectify themselves, see themselves as objects because of these overwhelming forces surrounding them. They do not think of themselves as someone with a voice anymore,  and therefore do not think they should be involved in politics.  This is the terrible foundation to the male-dominated government that the United States has.  If a woman has grown up seeing herself with little worth in the world, they will not participate in politics.

Countries that are often portrayed as extremely sexist have had women presidents and have more women in leadership than the US.  If girls knew this, maybe they would be more likely to become active in politics.
All of these problems have their roots in the media, as many problems in today's society do.  The way society uses media to portray women and girls has lasting effects on everyone in the world.  Something needs to change because the mindsets on women are very messed up.

  2. I agree. Children, both boys and girls, need to be taught from a young age that women are perfectly capable of being in leadership positions, particularly political. If they are taught this while they are young, they are more likely to realize what they see in the media is often wrong.

  3. I also found it shocking in the documentary how the US is so behind on having women in politics compared to other countries. I agree that we must shift this mindset that women can't be in politics and can't be powerful and learn to believe that we deserve to be leaders as much as men. To have a progressive society, we must build a society that has leaders that reflect the people. If not, it leads to an unbalanced world view, and true issues stop getting solved.
